I have owned the G-Box MX2 for about 5 months. I want to make it clear I have always loved this box, but there were some minor glitches at first with the over the air (OTA) update feature, XBMC occasionally freezing upon exiting, etc. I tried for over 3 months to get Skype to work well I never succeeded on my own. After 5 months my G-Box froze up and I had to restore the firmware. At that time I found that Matricom had released a new firmware for the box. It took me 10 minutes to load the new firmware and get the box back up and running. The firmware update took care of the booting problems, XBMC exiting issues, and Skype now works flawlessly with almost every webcam you throw at it. I have always been pleased with this box and how well it runs XBMC, but it runs very smooth with this new update. Netflix and other android apps had some issues prior to the update and now they seem to work great. I have several android games installed and they work great (I just plug in my XBOX controller and enjoy). I have always wanted to give this box a 5 star review and now… finally… I can. It was the best device running android that you could plug into your TV before the firmware update and it is even better now after the update. I recommend this device to anyone at $97 you can’t go wrong. It is a much more functional box than the Apple TV and truly brings entertainment to your television. I just bought another one as a Christmas gift for my brother. The only bad thing I can say is that I emailed Matricom three times with a question about uninstalling preloaded repositories in XBMC and I did not get a response, but they do provide good phone support and all the updates and firmware files you need to reset the device and keep it working, they also have a forum to ask questions to the community and that is better than some of the other vendors out there.

FINALLY an legit alternative to Apple TV and Roku and it works like a dream!, December 3, 2013

My entire family has used the Apple TV, Roku Players. We primarily used the Apple TV 2 to have access to XBMC. Although, since Apple seems to be tightening up ship when it comes to updates and jailbreaking (to allow xbmc and other apps) it was becoming a pain to keep Apple TV working smoothly. Also, Roku doesn’t allow XMBC.

We spent about two days researching comparable table top players like apple and roku and came across the Android player G-BOX. It was a piece of cake to set up. Took a bit of time to figure out the controls and how to navigate. Like anything new you have to adjust and break old habits especially when your used to Apple TV and Roku.

SOoooo… THIS player is a dream come true. It is absolutely a thing of beauty. XBMC is a native app and runs flawlessly. It’s smooth and fast. Since I wanted something to primarily run XBMC this the player to buy. For those of you who like AirPlay with Apple TV, the G-BOX has Airplay! I was able to stream my photos from my iPhone to the tv no problem. Some video formats didn’t seem to work when trying AirPlay but the majority of the photos and videos did.

My reasoning for this is simple.. XBMC and Android specifically integrated XBMC onto this player. You don’t have to jailbreak, install / uninstall, update, etc. SO far it has everything taken care of for you and keeps it maintained.

Here is my advice. Buy the G-BOX MX2 with the MatricomⓇ G-Mouse Rechargeable Wireless Gyro Air Fly Mouse / Keyboard Combo. Gives you a keyboard and a ‘Wii’ like remote to move the mouse around on screen. Otherwise you will be using the default control that comes with it to navigate. It works with the default control but less hassle with the keyboard and mouse remote.

Any questions, ask. I’ve bought a second one to use in another room. Great buy and FINALLY an alternative to Apple and Roku.

Had this device about a week, and since this is replacing a ROKU set top box my initial focus was/is on it’s entertainment capabilities. And so far it’s proved vastly superior to ROKU for entertainment value. It’s not plug and play – needs some set up and you need to download software. The Supplied remote is barely adequate, so order the G-mouse III when/if you order this product. I think ordering them together might even save you a few $$.

The instructions are minimal and barely useful. Since I’m not an 18 year old, born with a microchip implanted in my brain, (haven’t seen 18 in about 50 years), I had to do some searching to find out how to use this thing effectively.

Some advice for newbies, (like me), to help get you started with XBMC
Go to the “XBMC HUB” web page with your P.C.. Spend some time looking around, and then download their version of XBMC to your X-box. Follow the instructions for installation of XBMC and then download “fusion” from the same source. It’s all part of the XBMC installation instructions. I sat in front the T.V. with a laptop and followed the instructions for downloading to the X-box, step by step. You can open XBMC on your X-box and just jump to that part of the instructions for installing “fusion” – which installs the add-ons. The end result will give you a stable and current version of XBMC along with quite a few add-ons for entertainment including access to multiple movie channels, with release dates up to 2013. Now when you select a movie, you will have a number of options as to what channel, within the channel, (don’t worry it’ll become clear), to use to stream the movie. If one channel doesn’t connect, go to another. One of the movie channels “dailyflix” did not connect any movies I selected, so I don;t bother with it. When you’ve played with XBMC a little, go back to XBMC HUB and read the forums. Some were way too technical for me, but there’s a wealth of information in others. One thing I also did was download XBMC to my IMAC desktop so I could sit and explore this thing without tying up the T.V. while my wife wanted to watch “Oprah”. Makes for peace in the home!

This box appears to be able to do so much more than I’ve described so far, and I will keep “playing” to ultimately use it to it’s fullest potential.

So the bottom line: Yes I’m glad I bought the “G-box” but I’m only giving it four stars because I believe that the manufacturer could and should post on-line help for those of us who are computer literate, but need a little push in the right direction to get started. I’ll update this review as I find more uses for my new “toy”.

UPDATE – December 27, 2013. Not for the faint of heart – I gave up!!! Rating Reduced to 3*
My earlier enthusiasm for this product, after trying to use it for just over 2 weeks, has been somewhat tempered by a couple of realities.

Reality #1: Despite the inclusion of the latest version of the Android operating system, this little box will not turn your flat screen T.V. into a fully functioning computer. It does not come close to having the functionality of either my iMAC desk top, or Windows laptop. Even with the use of the Matricom wireless G-mouse, it is still a cumbersome process to enter data. I much prefer the full size keyboard and the much faster processing capabilities of the iMAC or the laptop.

Reality #2: Truly, the primary reason we purchased this was because it was said to be so much superior, in entertainment value, to my ROKU streaming set top box. Well, in my case I did not find this to be so. XBMC allows access to some excellent, virtually first run movies. Some just released this year, (2013). However, running XBMC to access movies proved to be a painstaking, slow, sometimes frustrating process. In almost all cases, selecting one of the several available “channels”(?), to stream the selected movie usually resulted in an error message, saying something to the effect; “there is a failure to resolve this connection”. So back to the beginning, select another “channel” and hope this one connects. In some cases it took 30 minutes from start to finish before a connection could be established and a movie streamed. It was also not uncommon for a movie to stop streaming part way through. Some days the whole process was almost as exciting as watching paint dry. NETFLIX was also accessible using the G-BOX, but sometimes it too proved to be hit and miss. Although “1080p” video quality is mentioned on the Amazon web page, the best I could ever achieve was “720.” And finally, I was only ever able to get the sound to play through 2 speakers. Never on the multiple speakers available in my 5.1 surround sound audio system.

In conclusion, I apologize to anyone who was influenced to buy this product after reading my initial review. And I am certain that there are many knowledgeable and enthusiastic G-BOX owners…
